DLC - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

14.August.2014

DLC or Downloadable Content is extra content for your games which you can get for what is usually a small fee. The most common form of DLC is multiplayer items or maps because "Everyone wants to be the best" The Call of Duty franchise is very DLC heavy especially with it's multiplayer maps, with there being usually 2-3 map packs planned or in development for the game even before it has released.

For most gamers DlC is a nice optional thing to have however some gamers feel compelled to own all the DLC for a game even if they rarely use it, for example I own all the DLC map packs for Modern Warfare 3 (Stupidly i know) and i very rarely play the game and even when the packs released i was putting less than a few hours a week into it. When companies plan DLC like that it is purely to make money, that is the general feeling. Especially when the DLC is planned prior to the release of the game. When games get DLC that further the story mode or add something unique that is when a DLC is deemed fair such as Skyrim. It took around 100 hours to complete that game fully and when the DLC came out those added another 20 or so hours of questing and exploring i feel 20 hours is worth the price of some DLC but when games are adding things like the clothes in Saints Row 2 you could buy... I mean WTF? are your single player clothes really that important? Some other pointless DLC includes the Oblivion Horse Armour and the Tomb Raider Multiplayer DLC both of those things could have not been made and nothing would be different.

Remember back on your PS2 when if you wanted something extra in your game you had to complete specific challenges like if you wanted a specific car you had to finish a race in a certain time or if you wanted a special weapon you had to get 50 headshots on a level? what happened to giving us a challenge to earn rewards instead of saying "Here have this weapon which will make everything easier, but WAIT! it will cost you $5" I mean it takes the fun out of most things. I know we have to pay for devs work but if the game was complete in the first place we wouldn't need DLC. Now i'm not saying DLC is bad and should be buried along with the likes of Miley Cyrus and The Walking Dead: Survival Instincts but what I am saying is that DLC should make you want it, because it adds a new dimension to your game or gives you another spree of enjoyment, not give you a new setting to have 12 year olds tell you "how much they slept with your mother" or "how much you suck a certain sexual organ" I think in future i will not purchase DLC until i have experienced 100% everything in the game and only then will i consider DLC if it adds something to the game that will bring hours of enjoyment.

Another thing is the Season Pass which is a relatively new thing to come out at least commonly. Sports games have season passes which give you updates all season long and even gives you weekly player packs for their "Ultimate team" and "career mode" as the name suggests. So why the hell do games like Call of Duty and Titanfall have season passes? I'll tell you why, it's so you can buy all the DLC before it is made which is a huge commitment. You are basically saying "Yes in 6 months time when all your DLC is out I will still be playing this game enough to warrant the extra $30 on a season pass" it is a stupid idea. Season passes should not be so games can sell you DLC before it's made it should be for sports games which is the only genre of game i can fairly say should have a seaon pass as sports games are constantly updated with player changes team changes and the fact you build a team from scratch so the weekly packs help. Can i also say when i Pre-ordered Titanfall i got the season pass free which was a nice gesture but i have literally played 10hours of Titanfall since it released so if i had bought the season pass i'd be a little bit annoyed!

Thank you for reading, it's a bit of a rant but i can safely say i will not be purchasing any DLC in the coming months.

TLDR: DLC is not bad but some is tedious and pointless, map packs are stupid and don't even get me started on Season passes... Oh and something about sucking a sexual organ.
