Girl Gamers, Just Attention Whores?

22.July.2014

I made a post on google+ earlier today which went something like "How come there is still to few female main character based games. I mean characters Gamer Girls can love? Do we need more female game developers or just a bigger audience of girl gamers?"

Which lead to a big discussion after being called a narrow minded attention whore, for using the term Gamer Girls in the first place. First I would like to say there are two type of girl gamers, on one hand there is the one who get dulled up and take pictures of herself holding a controller and on the other hand you have a female who just love to play video games. In case anyone is wondering. I'm talking about the second one. Not the first one I was accused for being earlier today.

The mainstream games, often come with main male characters, they look alike, sound alike and have almost the same basic story to back them up to be the cocky white male character they are. Oh yeah and normally they have some type of weapon of mass destruction.

Both the gaming industry, developers and gaming community is and have been a man's world and more and more girls are grabbing a controller, kicking ass and taking names. But yet there is still to few female lead characters in the mainstream games. As well as attractive games for teenage girls, apart from Sims. To make it more acceptable as well as more desirable to them to want to start playing video games.

I'm not saying that if there is a male main character, that I won't play the game or rate the quality of those game's as bad because I don't get to play a menstruation female with boobs. But I do enjoy a game like Beyond Two Souls or Tomb Raider, mostly due to the story around the female character. It feels like I can relate more and have more of a bond with the character.

I think a lot of things have to change before females consumers will be equal to male ones. But to break that circle we have to get out of the 1940's mindset and treat us as equal without having to hear the "kitchen joke" in every second session we go in. Girl gamers have to stop the hate between each other, it is not a competition for the male gamers attention, snap out of it! There can be more then one queen in a beehive. And last but not least the gaming developing companies, need to do small steps at the time to change the perspective as well as having more playable female characters within the mainstream games. There are still more male consumers, then female. But they need to soften up to the idea, to drag in more female gamers.
